TRIPOD: Training Civil Engineers on Post-Earthquake Safety Assessment of Damaged Buildings

General

In the case of a catastrophic earthquake, the direct control of the buildings is a critical action with powerful social impact. Given the circumstances prevailing chaos and the immediate need for a large number of skilled staff which will carry out checks, the experience has shown that teams up control in case, with different levels of experience and expertise, at the expense of reliability and consistency of control results.

Moreover, none of the countries participating in the project (which are earthquake, with relevant experience), there is no methodology to be applied nationally to assess the safety of damaged buildings.

The aim of the project TRIPOD (http://tripod.cti.gr) was to address these problems by designing and developing a comprehensive educational program (educational methodology and electronic platform) for people involved in building control.

The project was funded by the EU/Leonardo da Vinci program and in its implementation involved 6 partners from 5 different countries:

It began in 10/06 and completed in 09/08. In its implementation from RA CTI participated the e-Government Sector and Educational Technology Sector.

Project Objectives

Some of the project objectives were:

  • To combine existing methodologies and practices based on the roles of partners and their previous involvement in similar activities in order to create a common, unified core of knowledge about current practices for monitoring aftershocks buildings. This core knowledge also translates into a set of skills and education authorities (curriculum principles) needed to develop an advanced training regimen.
  • To develop a comprehensive training methodology for engineering controls, consisting of a model course, e-learning tool, learning content and give emphasis to: i) the methodology, quality and quantity of teaching materials ii) the dimension of self-teaching iii) easy to digest and the possibility of self-evaluation iv) to validate the approach and materials (to be held by the Greek Technical Chamber).
  • To develop an electronic learning environment this implements the above (set of flexible tools for setting standards, web distribution, management courses, library content).
  • To develop, with the help of e-learning platform 4 pilot courses, in 4 languages and organize on-line pilot training in participating countries based on these subjects.
  • To produce and distribute content in traditional media (independent course in CD-ROM, manual pocket for civil engineers) in 4 languages (English, Greek, Italian, Turkish).
  • To organize a viable format for the dissemination and exploitation of project results.

Deliverables

The deliverables of the project included:

  • Study: Post-earthquake assessment of building’s safety.
  • Study: Specification of Training Methodology.
  • E-learning environment.
  • Digital and printed content (stand-alone course on CD, a complete pocket-handbook for engineers).
  • 4 educational modules and engineers pilot training for each partner.
  • Portal project and an open international conference.
