The MaMLiSE project seeked to address a significant gap in the education and further training of teachers. Its main objective was to prepare training tools for future and in-service teachers who teach or plan to teach classes involving foreign children. At the beginning of their education in a new school, such pupils often have poor knowledge of the official or majority language in a particular country. Despite the growing number of foreign children in schools operating in the European Union, there are scarce opportunities for teachers to develop their knowledge and skills in this respect. Drawing on the materials and training courses that were designed as part of the present project, teachers learned how to adapt teaching materials from various subjects to be better equipped to teach this particular group of students across the various school curriculum areas.
In detail, the project developed a handbook on the pedagogy of teaching in heterogeneous classes that include migrant children. It included workshop type modules and an e-learning platform tailored to the training needs of school teachers. Additionally, the project partners developed teaching materials for selected subjects and prepared a set of tutorial videos for migrant parents to familiarise them with key aspects of family language policy. The consortium was also planning to pilot the teacher development courses in four countries, to conduct dissemination workshops in the partner countries, and to hold an international conference which will present the project’s initiative and its intellectual outputs.
